When I was growing up (yes, I'm a baby boomer), children would retaliate against other children who intentionally said something cruel by reciting, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." I tried it once. It fell flat. While the saying was meant to fend off more verbal attacks, it wasn't true. Even as a child, I knew that words could hurt deeply, sometimes worse than a physical slap because they don't just stop at the ears. They're felt in the heart.
I can't imagine anyone who's ever been told, "I don't love you anymore", responding with "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Words carry energy and can uplift or drain, which is why it's important to speak kindly to yourself and surround yourself with positive influences that support your well-being.
And it's not only words that affect our energy. Thoughts, environments, and the energies we encounter from people and things can influence how we feel and how we move through the day and our life.
